Rolling into 2024

To celebrate the new year, we decided to travel to Wimberley, TX for Edie’s maiden voyage. Wimberley is one of our favorite towns to visit. We were engaged there in 2019 and returned in 2021 for our mini-moon after our wedding. Nestled in the hill country, we always enjoyed hiking, visiting wineries, and exploring the charming town square.

Black Canyon RV Park

Black Canyon Wimberley is located less than ten minutes from the town square, but it is situated in an area where you feel like you are secluded. It offers a variety of cabins and seven RV sites. Numbers 1-5 are pull-through sites with numbers 1 and 5 offering fire pits. Numbers 6 and 7 are back-in sites. As this was our first experience bringing a camper to a RV park, I had a few questions for the owners. They were incredibly responsive to messages on Instagram and easily available by phone.

Booking our reservation was a very simple process. I entered our desired dates on the website and easily found available RV spots. We booked site 5 for a two night stay from December 30-January 1st. Before arrival, we were provided with a map of the area which included suggestions for roads to take to the park. Hill country roads in small towns can often be narrow and cross low areas where water can accumulate. The map provided indicated roads to avoid and made suggestions on how to navigate using GPS.

When we first arrived, we were pleased with the ease of finding our site and the cleanliness of the park. Of the seven RV sites, all of them were booked for the weekend. There were a variety of RVs camped for the weekend, but we were the only pop-up trailer in the park. It took just over a minute for us to pop-up the camper, and we began to set up camp. About an hour after arriving, the owners stopped by to bring firewood and see if we needed anything. They were friendly and encouraged us to contact them if we needed anything.

After our camp was set up, I began to explore the park. In addition to the seven RV sites, there were two farmhouse cabins across from us. The remainder of the park was located two driveways away. In that section, there were additional cabins, a clubhouse with virtual golf, and the pool area. Since there were no restrooms located near the RV sites, we used the restrooms at the pool area. They were absolutely beautiful and clean. We knew before booking that we would need to walk to the pool area to use the restroom. While speaking to the owner, she shared that we are the first camp site to not have our own bathroom in the camper, so she was eager to know how convenient it was to walk to the pool for the restrooms. I shared with her that the walk was simple, but it did require us to walk along the road. They are in the process of building a walking path away from the road, and they anticipate the path to be completed within a few months.

Camping Upgraded

For our first night at the site, we grilled hot dogs by connecting the grill to the outside of the Aliner, and we made a fire as we enjoyed music while sitting under the star-filled sky. The park was quiet and peaceful. One thing I really enjoyed was how dark the area was to allow us to see the stars. I could not contain my excitement thinking about how I would sleep in a bed and no longer needed to fumble with an air mattress in a tent. The heater in the Aliner was loud but effective. We struggled to find the right temperature throughout the night, but overall we were pleased with the heat it produced.

The next morning, we drank coffee from our custom mugs. I contacted the owner of this Etsy shop to see if she could create a mug with our Aliner. The result was adorable, and the cups are perfect to keep in the camper. Coffee time in the morning is a tradition for us and something that I look forward to each day. After breakfast, we hopped in the truck with Hank to explore two nearby state parks

Blanco State Park is located about 26 miles from Wimberley. We entered using our Texas State Park Annual Pass and drove around to check out the camp sites. When we visit state parks, we make a list of camp sites we like to reference for future camping visits. After driving around to check out the camping area, we parked to explore a hiking trail. Overall we only spent about 45 minutes at the park as our main attraction for the day was our second stop: Pedernales State Park.

Pedernales State Park is a popular park in the hill country located about 26 miles from Blanco State Park and about 35 miles from Wimberley. I highly recommend obtaining a “Save The Day” pass from the Texas State Park website. This reserves a spot for you to enter the park based on the designated entry time. The park rangers do not allow you to enter the park outside of your reservation time, so it is important to select a time that works best for your plans. Pedernales State Park is a great place to visit in the summer with areas to swim to escape the Texas heat. The falls were not flowing rapidly during our visit, but we still enjoyed the hike down the trail. We saw several dogs on our hike along with families and couples of all ages.

When we returned to the RV park, the owners had replenished our firewood for the evening and came by the invite us to a local brewery for a NYE fireworks display. We decline the invite because we had plans to make calzones on the campfire. To make the calzones, I made the dough at home using a simple Betty Crocker dough packet and placed the dough in a Tupperware container. We brought pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni, salami, and olives in plastic Tupperware containers. Tyler used a cast iron dutch oven over the fire pit coals to bake the calzones. We were pleased with the result, but decided we would definitely flip the calzones next time.

We spent the remainder of the night by the fire. The stars were even more beautiful the second night. Packing up the camper the next morning was so much easier compared to our trips tent camping. I took about thirty minutes to pack up the camper since I wanted to pack items in a strategic way to make unpacking on the next trip a simpler process. Overall we had a wonderful time at Black Canyon RV Park. Since we love to visit Wimberley, we will definitely stay at there again. Purchasing Edie was a great decision, and we are ready for our next adventure!

Happy Camping,

Dawn and Tyler
